What Does a Dental Assistant Career Look Like?

The core responsibility of a dental assistant is to provide chairside assistance to dentists during procedures. Prior to dental procedures, assistants are responsible for preparing and organizing the dental operatory and required instruments, as well as seating patients, reviewing their medical history and other pertinent information in the patient’s chart. During the procedure, dental assistants provide suction and deliver instruments to the dentist in a timely and efficient manner as they are needed. Other tasks, like fabrication of temporary crowns, may be required depending on the procedure itself. Once the procedure is complete, dental assistants escort patients to the checkout area, and then begin preparing the operatory for the next procedure.

A dental assistant career, however, can be much more varied than simply providing chair side assistance. In some offices, assistants are tasked with sterilizing instruments, helping track inventory and ordering dental supplies, or assisting with front desk operations. Dental assisting is truly an adaptive career, one in which no two days are exactly alike.

Why Choose a Dental Assistant Career?

While there are many benefits to pursuing a dental assistant career, one benefit is that the field of dentistry is expected to remain in high demand for the foreseeable future as large portions of the population age and more people gain access to dental care. In fact, The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the rate of dental assistant careers to grow much faster than average over the next decade.

An additional benefit is that unlike careers in other areas of the medical and healthcare industry, dentistry usually revolves around a typical 8-hour workday. This certainly makes a dental assistant career an attractive option for those who have a strong desire to work in the medical field but do not want to work erratic hours, be on call, etc. Furthermore, many private dental practices do not work a full, 40-hour workweek, which provides dental assistants with ample free time in addition to a bustling career for a healthy work-life balance.

Pursuing a dental assistant career is a great choice because there is and will always be a need for dental assistants. Dental care is a necessity for every human starting around age one. There are a few different categories to choose from when you are looking at dental assistant careers such as private practice, group practice, hospitals, education, and more. It’s important to get an idea of which avenue of dental care you are looking to pursue, so you can seek out jobs in those areas.

If you’re seeking a job that offers flexible work hours, a dynamic work environment, competitive pay, and sense of professional fulfillment, while building a highly valued skill set, a dental assistant career may be the right fit for you.
